Billabong High has always been at the forefront of initiating change in the way education and learning is perceived. Billabong High International School Pune is our newly thought through and designed infrastructure to embrace our move towards a personalised learning experience for our students. There is growing appreciation that the old approach [of didactic teaching] is ill-suited to the intellectual, social, motivational, and emotional needs of the new generation.
Our students have changed radically. Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach. Billabong High Pune not only recognises this shift but has geared the new infrastructure to meet and embrace this change.
We have also implemented (year 2018) phase 1 (phase 2 will take this experience to a more enriched one including VR and gamification) of our blended learning experience using technology to allow students to use our online learning platform Billabox which will:
- serve as a safe platform for learners to practice their concepts without fear of being judged on how they score.
- be a platform which learners can access 24/7.
- Provide unbiased and instant feedback on quizzes thus helping learners to curb their misconceptions instantly.
- Provide an opportunity for students to perfect their understanding by retaking quizzes and attain mastery before they undergo formal assessments.
- Be a platform where learners can ask queries and resolve some thus engaging in the most natural way of learning from others.
- Be an opportunity to revisit concepts if learners missed it in the class.
- Have a provision to stop, play or dive straight to the part of resources that they are yet to master. Thus, going through the content at their own pace.
- Foster GROWTH MINDSET where the learners believe that they can learn to complete tasks, solve complex problems, or grow their intelligence, rather than assuming they "can" or "cannot" do something based on their current abilities.
Billabong High International School has been designed to embrace this shift from a teacher directed one in terms of pace and content to a more learner centred with more autonomy and control over the pace of learning.
Our classrooms have ample space and are designed to increase student engagement and learning. Our classroom space is particularly relevant with the current emphasis on 21st century learning such that students can work in teams, problem solve, and communicate effectively. We have classrooms with adequate space to reconfigure seating arrangements and facilitate the use of different teaching methods that are aligned to 21st century skills.
The temperature in which a person works affects engagement levels and overall productivity—including student achievement. Anyone that has worked in a classroom or office that is too hot or too cold knows how difficult it can be when trying to work when the temperature is uncomfortable. To maintain temperature in every classroom we have ensured that our class rooms are air conditioned and well lit up thus increasing the efficiency and reducing fatigue in summers. Classrooms are well equipped with a T.V. White board and a reading corner to enhance student development and achievement. Aesthetically designed classrooms motivate students as well as teachers to attend school and provide a great teaching learning environment.
Our library acts as a center of academic and intellectual development for staff and students, and contains encyclopedias, various series of world books and over 10,000 publications. The library subscribes to national and international periodicals, journals and newspapers.
As we have continued to explore the learner-centered paradigm, we are also continuing to question and rethink the schedules and infrastructures that were designed during the Industrial Revolution. We are now building infrastructures that adjust to the learner rather than the learner adjusting to the infrastructures. Each cluster of classrooms has its own Learning Common. These are more open spaces with private study zones and flexible seating options. So students will experience the more structured conventional classroom learning style as well as a more open flexible learning style.
The Science laboratory experiences provide opportunities for students to interact directly with the material or with data drawn, using the tools, data collection techniques, models and theories of science. Our labs are well equipped with the latest apparatus. This helps students to develop a deep understanding of the science content, as well as an understanding of the nature of science, the attitudes of science and skills of scientific reasoning. All students get the opportunity to participate in laboratory investigations in a safe environment.
BHIS Pune is well equipped with computer labs. Additionally each classroom has internet access and facilities to compliment phase 1 of Billabox. The fully networked ICT laboratories are equipped with the latest computers and other state of the art IT applications, including interactive learning tools and also offer Internet connectivity. We have a Wi-Fi enabled campus.
To facilitate directed discovery, learning and develop analytical thinking, we have provided the students with a well -equipped Math lab. Our highly qualified and experienced Maths faculty imparts a strong logical orientation to the entire learning experience.
WELL EQUIPPED LIBRARY
The school library has a vast and diverse collection of books for children of all levels and is a storehouse of knowledge. It provides a congenial atmosphere to read and enables students to enrich and expand their horizons..
The aesthetically designed and spacious Auditorium of BHIS is well equipped with the best quality of sound and lighting systems thus providing a great platform to the students to perform their cultural and literary activities.
OPEN AIR THEATER (Amphi- theatre)
Many talent shows that bring out the inherent creativity of our students are held in the open air theatre of our school, which has a seating capacity of 500 students. This gem of an outdoor space plays host to classic dramas, special assemblies, poetry morning, culminating events.
AUDIO VISUAL ROOM
The school has an A.V. Room which enables the students to avail the benefits of the latest multimedia facilities. The audio visual room with LCD Projector helps our students to watch documentaries, projects, presentations.
Music education is important for exposing young children to a variety of instruments, choral arrangements, and style of music to enhance their educational experience and foster their academic, social, emotional growth and creative thinking skills.
The school building is equipped with a well maintained & vibrant room for art & craft for the students. Children portray their imagination on paper in form of modern art, figurative drawing and landscape. The young artists excel in playing with colours from all the sorts ranging from crayons to oil paints.
Since times immemorial, dance has been the expression of our lives. The school is providing a good opportunity to all its students to learn western and classical dance forms under the supervision of trained teachers.
The sick bay has a full time qualified nurse to attend to children if required. If any medication is administered, a diary notification and / or a phone call may be made.
Our café is not only a place to eat! It is a place where children will bond with community based sessions of karaoke, learn about the history and geography of food across cultures and countries. We will have International food festivals. They will understand the importance of a balanced diet as well as develop an understanding of 1st and 3rd world diets. A healthy, balanced and nutritive meal will be made available to children of all classes. The menu for the same will be prepared by a food menu committee that includes a nutritionist, parent and student representatives.
